The 90-minute voice session that changes everything
We run a 90-minute voice session with every founder before writing a word. Here's the agenda and why it's the highest-leverage hour.
The single highest-leverage hour in a new engagement is the voice session. We schedule it before we write anything, before we shoot anything, before we touch the ad account. Until we have the founder's voice on the record, in their own words, with their actual opinions captured cleanly, we're guessing.
The founders we work with are operators. They're not used to being asked structured questions about why they do things the way they do. The session pulls that out of them — and the recording becomes the source of truth for every asset that follows.
Why voice matters more than visual
A brand can survive bad design. It cannot survive bad voice. Visual identity is what someone notices in three seconds; voice is what they remember after three weeks. When customers refer their friends, they don't describe the logo — they repeat a phrase the founder said.
Voice is also the hardest thing to fake. AI can mimic visual style instantly. AI can mimic voice — but only with a strong reference document, which is exactly what this session produces.
The agenda — five blocks, 15–20 minutes each
Block 1: Origin
Why does the company exist? What was the founder doing before? What was the moment they decided to start it? We're listening for the specific story, not the polished version. The unpolished version is what becomes the founder film and the about page.
Block 2: Beliefs
What do you believe about this industry that most of your competitors don't? What's the dumbest thing you see other companies doing? If you could change one thing about how customers shop in this category, what would it be? This block produces contrarian angles, the seeds of every winning ad we'll ship.
Block 3: Customers
Walk through the last three customers in detail — what they came in for, what they actually bought, what they said in the room. This is where we extract the real customer language that ends up on the landing page.
Block 4: Process
How does the work actually get done? What's different about how you do it vs. how a typical competitor does? What do customers not realize they're paying for? This block becomes the proof and process sections of every funnel.
Block 5: Future
Where is the company in three years? Who's the customer you most want to be working with? What would you stop doing if you could? This block sets the editorial direction for the next 12 months of content.
Everything an agency ships in the first 90 days is a function of either the voice session or the absence of one.
How to run it
- Two interviewers — one asks, one takes notes and watches the clock
- Recorded video and audio — not just notes; the recording is the asset
- No slides, no script, no laptop in front of the founder
- Aggressive follow-ups: 'say more,' 'give me an example,' 'who specifically'
- Stop them when they default to industry jargon — pull them back to plain language
What we do with the recording
The 90 minutes becomes a living voice document — a structured pull-quote library plus a written tone-of-voice guide. That doc becomes the reference for every script, ad, page, and email we write. It's also what gets fed into AI tools so the AI-assisted writing actually sounds like the founder.
Without the voice doc, AI-generated copy reads like generic AI copy. With it, you can scale writing throughput 10x without losing the voice. This is the upstream investment that makes the rest of the content engine work.
The bottom line
90 minutes, once. The founder shows up, talks, leaves. Everything downstream — ads, pages, email, brand — has a source of truth. This is the cheapest, fastest, highest-leverage piece of brand work a service business can do. And it's the same one the wins in our case studies are quietly built on top of.
